The engine is really well suited to the automatic gearbox, personally I wouldn't buy one any other way. Try both, but I think you'll probably agree. Personally i think the engine is wells suited to a manual gearbox! Wide torque curve, pulls hard from idle, you can pull away in traffic without any accelerator, and being a manual, there are so many more driving options availible to you not to mention being able to rock it to get out of snow The only issue i could find with the manual is the very low 1st gear and the jump to 2nd, not that the engine bogs down or anything, and most of the time you can just pull away smoothly in 2nd!
Regarding fuel economy, in normal driving, my experience is that the auto is a couple of mpg down, but if know how to hypermile, you can easily push the manual mpg up into the low 50's without too much trouble my auto steadfastly refuses to get out of the low 40's The biggest issue with the manual, is that there really are very few of them to choose from second hand.

Coming from what is essentially a go-kart, initially I only considered manual gearbox examples, however given the lack of choice I decided to give the 6-speed auto a test drive.
I was surprised how well it suited the car, so bought a Step-Auto example, with the paddle-shifters. Stick it in drive and it is a nice easy lazy ride, however move the stick to DS and the gear changes are much sharper, it holds each gear longer and kicks down quicker. Obviously you can intervene with the paddles for a manual-like experience. Not all automatic cars have the paddles, so be sure to check if you decide you must have them. I'd say they aren't essential but more of a nice to have, as you can always change gear sequentially with the stick in DS mode.
Stick it on the motorway with the cruise control around 70 and it does MPG all day long. I thought I wouldn't like the automatic but I'm glad I gave it a try as it doesn't drive like an old-fashioned slush box. Another thing to consider if you want to go down that route is the re-map possibilities. The automatic box is rated for a higher torque input, so can be pushed harder with torque that would munch the clutch or worse on the manual this is why they don't sell a manual D.
My advice is try both and have an open mind. If I didn't still have my Elise it might have been different but as it is, I now have the best of both worlds. Flappy paddles get used if I want to play but it is certainly sporty enough in auto sport mode. I wouldnt consider a manual box for this car, just seems a backward step with modern auto boxes. The engine pulls find from under rpm, so you can potter along in 6th at just under 40mph and then accelerate away at the same speed as the rest of the traffic. Very relaxing way to travel and over the past 42k miles I've averaged Worst tank has been 41mpg, and best 44mpg.

Vlastne som chcel vylucit, ze tamta dA bola nejakym sposobom vadna slabsia alebo cokolvek.. Znovu ta ista situacia, zbytocne jebe do otacok, tah uz fakt ze biedny jazda v "S rezime" tomu vobec nepomohla.
Uz som si bol isty, ze automat v E46 u mna skoncil. Toto bol cisto moj subjektivny pocit a nazor co sa tyka E46 a mojej uz vyriesenej problematiky manual vs automat.

Ak jazdis moc a a chces nieco usetrit napr na servis, tak To uz vsetko zalezi na Tebe.
