I format the disk and install Win 98 on the machine and everything goes fine until the second reboot after it detects the plug and pray devices. Of course if I reboot again, I get the same error!! I have searched this forum and many others on the web and have found a lot of stuff about UMAX scanners being the problem, but I don't have a UMAX scanner or any scanner attached for that matter. In fact, I removed everything except the video card and reinstalled and got the same result.
I've tried extracting the file from the Win98 CD. I've searched throught the autoexec. I've scoured the web for someone who is haveing the exact same problem I'm having, but no luck. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks Mike Rohde rohdem marshallengines. MOre than likely it is some wrong jumper setting on the motherboard. All the best. Bad Ram could cause it, a flaky or too small HD can cause it. Try one of the two following to get your PC up and running: To resolve this behavior, use the appropriate method: Method 1 At the command prompt, type: dir vmm Even though you say there isn't any scanners connected to your computer, there may be a reference to "umaxis Well, after trying many of your suggestions and those of my co-workers, I finally stumbled upon the answer This is crazy.

Again I say hogwash. As I just said I think this whole issue is just plain old-fashioned hogwash. And as we all know, anything posted on the web spreads like wildfire and is taken to be gospel by many even if it shouldn't. A more forgiving reason it you want to call it that , although unlikely based on the details of what is being said, is that a person whose vmm To try and explain why what these sites tell you is wrong, you need to know what vmm Basically vmm Between the stripped headers and the compression used in vmm One of the most important things about vmm You also have to know that the vmm If you did extract vmm So to reiterate, the files these web sites claim are missing are not missing, they are actually part of vmm The fact that users could not find these files on their system may have led to the acceptance that they Win9X did not install them.
I disabled the devices, and the problem seemed to go away. But now, I can't enable the Floppy disk or Hard disk controllers. They all have the yellow exclamation point. When I attempt to update the drivers, Windows says that I'm already using the best driver for the device.
I tried disconnecting the drive from the motherboard and restarting, and I still can't get the yellow exclamation points to go away. If I start in safe mode, windows seems to see the drives, but the CD drive is not visible in Windows explorer.
Please help. Any ideas? VMM32 is the folder that contains virtual device driver files needed for system start up in Windows 9x. Did you install any DOS based games, programs, drivers, or change any settings before this occurred? Do you have System Restore to get you out of this mess?
